I am a first time teacher, but I've done some work volunteering with ESL and Special Needs kids in the past. I've lived and worked in Vietnam and India before, so moving to a foreign country doesn't trouble me too much. I thought about a roommate, but I'm married so it's hard to find someone that wants *two* roommates, haha! I've downloaded a few apps on my phone and picked up some books on learning Chinese. I looked into the Chinesetown lessons offered to us, but none of them work too well with my schedule. I'm still working at the moment. Mostly I've been reading up on Chinese history, expats blogs on moving/living in Shanghai. I've browsed around on the internet for apartments, but I know most of that will have to happen once I get there. I've also been reading a lot on teaching, particularly teaching ESL online. I'm nervous about how that will be different than teaching children in real life, where you have the benefit of gestures, visual aids, more hands-on activities, etc. What about you? Have you been a teacher before? Is this your first time living abroad?
I can't wait either! Only a few more months! I've looked around online for apartments, and I had a friend who taught with EF in Shanghai, she suggested looking for a place close to the center. What about you? What kind of things have you been doing to prepare?
