@ all incoming teachers. Hello! I am sure you are very excited for the move that is coming up soon. Just to give you a bit of personal experience on the housing situation. EF will provide access to two realtors that will take you around the city on your days off. Depending on how many are in your onboarding group it can be easy or annoying. I was shown multiple flats with a group of four, which wasn't too bad. But have in mind the area you'd like to live in; distance from school, next to bus/metro stops, in city center/outside. Also how much you are willing to spend.
There are a few spots around that I know to have many teachers living in. I live in Liede (metro line 5). Its very upscale and more expensive than most (3400 yuan) Zhujiang new town (also line 5) is very similar. South on line 3 near canton tower, i know people living there for slightly cheaper than me. Also north near railway station east, there are moderately priced places closer to 2500/ person. If you are planning on living by yourself expect to pay more. Single bedroom flats range from low 2000 for older places to 3500 for modern styles. Some will have western style toilets, others squat toilets.
Also, be ready to pay a large down payment upon move in. I paid a full 3 months of rent for a deposit. Then you have other expenses such as internet, water jug service, and furnishings to think about. Utilities and internet are usually paid every 3 months or so but are fairly inexpensive.
I was planing on spending roughly 2500 to 3500 on rent when arriving. I was thinking about living alone, but quickly made contact with 2 who needed a roommate. I did not have to buy any pots/pans, bedding; internet was already set up, we have water service, and a real estate agent who if we need anything fixed, she can speak very good english (also a fee for an agent). I spent about 13000 just to move in.... luckily EF does provide a 10,000 interest free loan which you can use. They will take out of your paycheck over a few months.
My advice is talk with others if you want a roommate, have an idea of how far (walking/bus/metro) you want to live from work, or area you want, and bring extra money. I have an international VISA credit card which my apartment would not accept. So bring it in cash. I brought around 3000 yuan/kwai/RMB (same thing). It's not hard to get started but can be a bit stressful to find what you are looking for. Also, it has been said that the realtors will show you bad locations first, so beware. And you can always try to bargain for lower rent or things included like missing furniture or appliances. The flats are usually fully furnished.
If ya'll got anything else you want to know, just holler. Happy travels!
I am so very excited for this journey. If there is any tips/advice/guidance that can be given, I am open.
I look forward to meeting you all!
Hi, is any one arriving to Gz on 19th?
Hey there Guangzhou teachers,
I'll be arriving in October, teaching adults. I'm wondering who else will be in that arrival group. Also, wanted to say hey! I'm really looking forward to being in the city and getting to know you all.
Does anyone have info or advice on the housing situation? I am wondering about neighborhoods, the vibe of different neighbordhoods, what each have to offer, prices of housing, etc. Please don't hesitate to say hey. Best, Ari
