Where to live in the city?

You are probably trying to figure out where to locate yourself in Beijing. Beijing is huge, so you need to consider your commute time, the amenities you want to be near and the cost.

A good place to start is to look at the Beijing Districts Map. If you are unfamiliar with Beijing, you might want to check out this Description of Beijing city areas.

You will also want to consider the pros and cons of living with a roomate. Read this article to see more on this topic.

Finally, I'm sure you want to start thinking of the search itself. Read Guide to Apartment Hunting in Beijing to apartment hunting that was written by an agent who has worked with a lot of  teachers at EF. She has also put together a Price Guide to the areas that teachers generally choose to live in.

See the pages on the right hand side for our apartment hunting checklist, information on admin stuff, some videos of typical teacher apartments and articles about saving money in China.

Hi Everyone,

I just arrived in Beijing this Wednesday, May 13th! I'm looking for a roommate(s) or a fairly inexpensive 1 bedroom/studio apartment close to the 10 line. I'll be working in the Haidian District, but I don't mind a bit of a commute. My budget is 3,000-4,500 rmb/month.

I'm friendly, clean, and respectful of personal space & keeping the common areas of the apartment clean. I look forward to exploring Beijing and other parts of China during my stay. I enjoy movies, eating, and hanging out with friends.

If anyone is interested in having me as a roommate, knows of someone else looking, or has any information on a reasonably priced 1 bedroom/studio apartments that are in a safe neighborhood please feel free to contact me :) Hope to hear from you soon,

Brooke

I am also arriving May 13th. Been looking at other options like living alone or cultural homestay. I fairly tolerant and accepting of anyone to share with my apprehensions more lie with me and if someone can tolerate me, but maybe i'm not that bad. I try to keep clean and tidy, particularly shared spaces.

I like to cook and eat at the same time. Interested in sports, keeping fit and maybe playing football. I want to get out of the house as often as possible.

I read, watch movies and listen to music. I want to learn Chinese. I am teaching Adults and I am therefore working Wednesday to Sunday afternoons/evenings. I don't smoke either. I am laid back, easy going and enjoy having conversations and laughing though its nice to have my own quiet time as well.

I would have a budget of 3500 to 4500 and my email is davidrennie75@outlook.com I have already looked at the Beijinger and other ads and would hope to find somewhere close to Winterless Center where I am working though a commute doesn't bother me.

Hi everyone! I'll be arriving in Beijing on May 13th. I'm looking to share an apartment with some amiable EFers who share my passion for exploration, history and culture. A little more about myself: I'm a self-proclaimed bookworm, generally optimistic with a healthy mixture of pessimism and sarcasm. I am a bit of a geek. I love comics, Studio Ghibli, Sailor Moon, Harry Potter is my life and I'm Superwholocked. I'm very outgoing, but I appreciate my alone time. I love to cook (when under stress I tend to bake or cook, usually more than I can eat alone). I have a mainly vegetarian diet but I'm open to trying new dishes. I will have a budget of 4500 rmb, and I am more interested in traditionally Chinese lodgings and surroundings.

Who am I looking for in a roommate: If you share my interests, that's great! It's also unnecessary. I love meeting and getting to know new people from all walks of life. I'm LGBT Friendly. I'd prefer someone clean, independent, fun and honest. (I'm all about open communication). You can be male or female. Have a strong aptitude for adventure, be willing to laugh at yourself and know how to relax.

If you made it this far, and you are still interested, send me a message on WeChat. My ID is: riverofwhimsy

Hope to hear from you,

Jazz

Hey all!

I'll be starting in Beijing in March and just wanted to put my name out there in case anyone's looking for a new roommate around that time. Not sure where I'll be allocated just yet so as it stands i'll consider anywhere.

Looking for some pretty cheap rent, under 4000 for sure. Would be nice to live in an apartment that's more than just a bed in a room (i.e; friendly / social living environment)

I've lived with guys, women, couples in the past so i'm easy in terms of house-demographics.

Reach me at maxthomson@live.co.uk if anything comes up.

Cheers!

Hey everyone I'm Asher, I'm due to arrive in Beijing on November 5th. Considering the idea of a roommate. I'm pretty laid back, very organised (I'm normally the one to make lists and set reminders) and easy to get along with (So I've been repeatedly told)

Male/Female welcome, must be a non smoker...I would say I prefer outgoing, adventurous people, but that pretty much applies to everyone on here :)

You are welcome to get in touch for more details at : ad_harris@live.co.uk

Stephen, if you're in Dongcheng and he is in Xicheng, I'd recommend living on Line 2. There's loads of places along there. I have several friends who lived in Andingmen and Guluodajie.

For those with school allocations in the south eastern corner of BJ, I'd recommend looking at the Shuangjing stop on Line 10. It's got artsy stuff, Carrefour and decently priced expat-friendly apartments. (Also has an American diner called Lily's which is where you can get your Thanksgiving necessities.)

Hello all! I'm also reaching Beijing on the 10th and looking for a roommate/roommates (non-smoking). I'm 21, from Michigan, and so excited to start exploring Beijing. Hit me up if you are interested in rooming together!

Katie - I will email you too :)
